An interesting article on standards based grading.

A colleague of mine shared this recently. It is from a talk given by Seymour Papert back in 1998. Very powerful!

"So the model that says learn while you're at school, while you're young, the skills that you will apply during your lifetime is no longer tenable. The skills that you can learn when you're at school will not be applicable. They will be obsolete by the time you get into the workplace and need them, except for one skill. The one really competitive skill is the skill of being able to learn. It is the skill of being able not to give the right answer to questions about what you were taught in school, but to make the right response to situations that are outside the scope of what you were taught in school. We need to produce people who know how to act when they're faced with situations for which they were not specifically prepared."

Congratulations to Evan McCauley and Meghan Kiernan for completing The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's (LLS) 2017 Students of the Year campaign for the State of Rhode Island. Students of the Year is the newest LLS campaign where nominated high school student leaders raise money and awareness for the fight against blood cancers such as leukemia.  Evan and Meghan were part of 8 amazing students across RI that raised an incredible $100,212.98.  Way to go!!!!

SHS teacher Mrs. Dempsey and our French 5 students will be participating in the Francophone Flag Raising Ceremony at the RI State House next week.  This is a great opportunity for SHS and our students to showcase their skills in front of many local and international dignitaries.  Good luck!
