Weekly Update 11/18

This week's SHS Faculty PD.

Our Alumni Day Project originally scheduled for November 22nd has been postponed to December 20th.

First quarter grades were finalized this past Tuesday. Please visit the Parent Portal to review your child's grades. If you have any questions or concerns please contact your child's school counselor. If your child received three or more F's they are ineligible for the second quarter.

Good luck to the SHS football team.  They play in the Division III semi-final game at 10:30 on Saturday, November 19th at Burrillville.

Next week is a two day week. No school on Wednesday, November 23rd.

Thanksgiving football is at North Providence this year. Game starts at 10:30 am.

Parent Teacher Conferences are scheduled for December 8th. More details to come.
I would like to give a BIG shout out to the SHS Counseling Department for organizing a career fair for our tenth graders last week.  Led by Mrs. McGinnis and the Career Fair Advisory Board, our tenth graders had the opportunity to learn about a number of exciting career opportunities.  Check out the article in this week's Valley Breeze.

SHS recently partnered with Smithfield Recycling Coordinator Melissa Chaput on a fun project. Students from a variety of clubs and athletic teams painted recycling bins which will be placed around the SHS campus.  Thank you Mrs. Chaput for reaching out to us on this project.

I recently came across this great video about the impact teachers have on students.  Very thankful for the hardworking teachers at SHS!

Congratulations to SHS Senior Ally Beaton.  She signed her national Letter of Intent to continue her softball career at Assumption College next year.

Have a great weekend!

Weekly Update 11/11

"With malice toward none, with charity for all, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation's wounds."   --Lincoln

This week's SHS Faculty PD

Class of 2019 Shane Briggs
Class of 2020 Jacob Lawton

Big thank you to Detective Greg Catlow from the Smithfield Police Department for presenting the components of A.L.I.C.E. to our students this week!  I am proud of the partnerships SHS has with SPD, SFD, and EMA.  We work together to ensure student safety!

Interesting article about class ranks.  Are they needed?  Do they still make sense?  If you are interested in talking more about this please reach out to Mr. Kelley.

In case you missed it this week, I was granted a leave of absence for the 17/18 school year so that I may serve as President of the National Association of Secondary School Principals.  You may find more information here.

SHS Student Council has your SHS gear. Check out the new selections. Makes great Christmas presents! http://ow.ly/OGWM3061HE4

It was an emotional week at SHS due to the election. Many strong opinions and view points were discussed. I addressed the students, teachers, and staff with a brief statement that I compiled from a few different sources.  I felt their words were relevant to SHS and the feelings many were working through this week.  Here is a portion of my statement to the students, teachers and staff.

As our nation moves forward, let us remember to be kind to one another. Listen to each other. Move toward understanding and respect the rights of every person.
At Smithfield High School, we will always continue the great American tradition of being an inclusive and accepting school– a school that embraces the freedom of speech, as well as protecting the civil liberties of all.

During the course of the week I came across many great quotes and statements. I collected a few for this week's Weekly Update to share. I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Because we’ve adopted a “fast-food” approach to forming opinions these days, most are uninformed and irrelevant.

Weekly Update 11/4/16

This week's SHS Faculty PD.

Week of November 7th has two days with no school.  Here is the schedule for this week.  We packed a lot into a short week!

Tough weekend for SHS athletics.  Boys and Girls soccer were eliminated from the state playoffs.

Girls and Boys Cross Country will be participating in the the state meet on Sunday, Nov. 6th.  Best of luck to our runners.

The RIIL will be finalizing the football playoff schedule on Sunday, Nov. 6th.  It looks like we will have a home playoff game on Friday, November 11th.  Check the school calendar later in the week to confirm.

Mr. Barrette and I recently sent the following message to all four classes. It is an important reminder for our students regarding technology use.

"Hello! Mr. Barrette (Director of Technology) and I would like to share a few reminders regarding technology use. As discussed with you and your parents when you received your Google account and Chromebook, we expect that students will use technology tools appropriately. As required by applicable laws and local policies, the school and district uses web and content filters to keep Smithfield students safe when students use certain inappropriate words or phrases in email messages and documents (including the comments in the documents). These filters notify the high school administration. This causes us to pull you out of class to have a conversation about appropriate technology use, causing you to miss important class time. Please keep this in mind moving forward. Your school account is your professional account. Please use it in this way. Thank you."

Please get out and vote on Tuesday!
Have a great week!
