Weekly Update 4/22/16

Spring vacation has come to an end.  Time to get back to work.  I hope everyone had a restful week off.  See you Monday 4/25.

Wednesday, April 27 is a half day for underclassmen due to senior portfolio presentations!  Dismissal at 10:15 am!

Please take a moment to check out the May testing calendar.  Very busy month with AP, NECAP, and PARCC assessments.

Do you need community service hours?  The Town of Smithfield Earth Day Clean-up will take place on April 23rd from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. with sign-in at Deerfield Park.  See flyer for more info.

Bryant University will be hosting the StarTalk program this summer.  The program will run from July 11-July 22 with a trip to China at the end of the program.  Anyone interested should check out the application.  

SHS took fourth place out of 22 teams in this years Science Olympiad. SHS won medals in individual events totaling 1 bronze, 5 silver, and 2 gold. Much gratitude to our coaches Mrs. Babcock and Mr. Leonard, our Industrial Tech department, and SHS parent Mrs. Brenner. Also want to give a shout out to the Gallagher Middle School Science Olympiad Team. They took fourth place in the middle school division.  

Congratulations to our music program!  Both the choir and the band participated in Orlando Fest over spring break.  67 students competed.  Both groups received Excellent ratings. The students also performed in Epcot's Melody Garden concert venue.

Weekly Update 4/8/16

This week's SHS Faculty PD!

April 4th school committee meeting moved to April 11th.

No school the week of 4/18.  SPRING BREAK!

SHS continued the Senior Oratorical tradition this week.  Ten seniors shared their stories with the entire school.  Congratulations to all of our participants.  You can check out the video of the event thanks to Mr. D!

This week SHS was fortunate to have the RI Supreme Court hold a session for our Law 1, Law 2, Crime in America, and AP Gov't classes.  Thank you to Chief Justice Suttell and his staff for sharing this experience with our students.  

Our foods classes at SHS took care of the food for our visitors from the Supreme Court.  Thank you to Ms. Richards, Ms. DiSano, Ms. Cassano, and our student chefs for putting out quite a spread for our guests.  

Our Nook winners received their goodie bags this week at a special ceremony at Barnes & Noble in Smithfield.  Thank you to Colleen at Horace Mann for organizing this great event for Smithfield and Lincoln students.  Need to give a shout out to Mrs. Solda for organizing the SHS event.  

A few of Mr. Cullen's calculus students took part in a calculus contest at URI this week.  Dave English, Olivia Holowachuk, Paige Howard, Taylor Labbe, and Erin Powers finished in 6th place out of the 16 teams participating.    

David Gaulin received the Unsung Hero Award from the RI Reds Heritage Society. The award goes to the RI High School Hockey Player that best exemplifies strong academics, sportsmanship, team Play/Support, perseverance, leadership, and hockey ability.

On March 22, the School Counseling Department hosted the 2016 College and Career Planning Workshops. In attendance were students and parents from Smithfield High School and North Smithfield High School, as well as other public and private area high schools. Presenters from around the state gave workshops on Resume Writing, the College Essay, Financial Aid, NCAA Eligibility Center, the Common Application, First Impressions from the Admissions Officer's Perspective, and Best Fit Colleges. Information on Rhode Island College's Early Enrollment Program, the US Army, US Air Force, Local Scholarships, Career Opportunities for Artists, the Community College of Rhode Island, Roger Williams University, Salve Regina University, Bryant University, the University of Rhode Island, Johnson and Wales University and New England Institute of Technology was available through representatives.

This was the first attempt at sharing our resources with another school system, and attendance was excellent!


Congratulations to our SADD Mocktail Team.  They took first place out of 18 schools in the statewide mocktail competition.  

Good luck to our SHS Band and Choir students who will be competing in Florida during our spring break!

Weekly Update 4/1

This week's SHS Faculty PD!

SHS was well represented at the Rhode Island Home Show this weekend.  SHS students worked with 20 other schools to build two tree houses.  Truly magnificent work.  

Congratulations to Head Football Coach Chris Branch.  He was selected the Division IV Coach of the Year from the Providence Gridiron Club. Coach Branch will be honored at the Quonset O’ Club later this week.  

Horace Mann continues to be a great supporter of SHS.  They recently held a reading contest.  The winners receive a Nook.  The following students are the Nook winners from Smithfield High School:

Two community service opportunities:
  1. New England Family Fun Festival email: to sign up to volunteer for one or both days of the event.
  2. The CVS Charity Golf Classic is a fun event, vols get shirts, meal ticket and an opportunity to watch the game and see pros up close.
Last week, students attended the RI Health Career Fair at NEIT and the GRRL Tech day at URI. They were accompanied by Ms. Davis. Students attended the Marine Trades Career Fair at NEIT and were accompanied by Mr. Jackson.

Spring Break is April 18-22.
