Merry Christmas!  Happy Hanukah! Happy Holidays to the entire Smithfield Community!

BIG shout out to Mrs. Gliottone for organizing Alumni Day again this year.  Lot's of detail work but a great opportunity for our seniors to learn from our Alumni!

Our Academy of Finance hosted their alumni breakfast this week.  Thank you Mr. Spring, Ms. Andrews, and Ms. Valentine for organizing this awesome annual event!

SHS is losing a great colleague and friend this week.  School Resource Officer Robert "Squib" Squillante is leaving the Community Unit and moving back to Patrol at the start of the new year. Squib will continue to coach our girls soccer team but we will miss his daily practical jokes, quick whit, and most importantly the special relationships he has developed over the years.  SHS hosted a short ceremony to acknowledge Squib at the annual holiday assembly.  Mr. Lenore put together a short video for Squib to remember us.

Congratulations to our November Students of the Month:
2017  Chloe Olean
2018  Ryan Bradley

In case you missed it this week, I was granted a leave of absence for the 17/18 school year so that I may serve as President of the National Association of Secondary School Principals.  You may find more information here.

SHS Student Council has your SHS gear. Check out the new selections. Makes great Christmas presents!

It was an emotional week at SHS due to the election. Many strong opinions and view points were discussed. I addressed the students, teachers, and staff with a brief statement that I compiled from a few different sources.  I felt their words were relevant to SHS and the feelings many were working through this week.  Here is a portion of my statement to the students, teachers and staff.

As our nation moves forward, let us remember to be kind to one another. Listen to each other. Move toward understanding and respect the rights of every person.
At Smithfield High School, we will always continue the great American tradition of being an inclusive and accepting school– a school that embraces the freedom of speech, as well as protecting the civil liberties of all.

During the course of the week I came across many great quotes and statements. I collected a few for this week's Weekly Update to share. I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Because we’ve adopted a “fast-food” approach to forming opinions these days, most are uninformed and irrelevant.

Weekly Update 11/4/16

This week's SHS Faculty PD.

The RIIL will be finalizing the football playoff schedule on Sunday, Nov. 6th.  It looks like we will have a home playoff game on Friday, November 11th.  Check the school calendar later in the week to confirm.

Mr. Barrette and I recently sent the following message to all four classes. It is an important reminder for our students regarding technology use.

"Hello! Mr. Barrette (Director of Technology) and I would like to share a few reminders regarding technology use. As discussed with you and your parents when you received your Google account and Chromebook, we expect that students will use technology tools appropriately. As required by applicable laws and local policies, the school and district uses web and content filters to keep Smithfield students safe when students use certain inappropriate words or phrases in email messages and documents (including the comments in the documents). These filters notify the high school administration. This causes us to pull you out of class to have a conversation about appropriate technology use, causing you to miss important class time. Please keep this in mind moving forward. Your school account is your professional account. Please use it in this way. Thank you."

Please get out and vote on Tuesday!
Have a great week!
