POY Washington Trip

Last week I was fortunate to attend the 2012 Principal of the Year ceremony in Washington DC.  Thanks to the wonderful support of MetLife, Lifetouch, and NASSP, high school and middle school award winners were treated to a first class event.

On Thursday all award winners stormed Capitol Hill to meet with our legislators.  I was privileged to meet with Senator Whitehouse, Senator Reed, and Representative Cicilline.  We discussed the re-authorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), Common Core State Standards, and the Success in the Middle Act, which is sponsored by Senator Whitehouse.  We also attended a press conference held by Senator Reed on the Educator Preparation Reform Act.  It was a busy day on the hill but extremely rewarding.

On Friday all of the award winners participated in networking activities designed to share best practices.  During the evening, all award winners were invited to a black tie dinner.  My wife and I were treated like royalty.  We had formal portraits taken, we were treated to a great dinner, and I received an awesome award.  I really appreciate the sponsorship from MetLife and Lifetouch.

On Saturday, my wife and I spent the day exploring the city.  We started at Arlington cemetery where we experienced the changing of the guard.  We took the metro to Columbia Heights for lunch with Michelle’s cousin and girlfriend.  After lunch we made our way to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum and walked through the National Mall.

Overall the trip was a success.  The folks at NASSP were top notch and made everything go smoothly.  Mary Kingston and Amanda Karhuse did a great job preparing the principals for their Hill visits.  I met some tremendous educators and learned many new ideas.  I was fortunate to meet two principals I knew from twitter.  Jimmy Cassas from Iowa and Rick Robins from Utah are two principals I encourage others educators to follow.

I would like to thank RIASP, NASSP, and my staff for all of their support throughout this process.  It’s a tremendous honor to be the Rhode Island High School Principal of the Year.  I could never do it alone.  I am fortunate to work with great teachers, hard working students and a great administrative team.  I cannot thank them enough for everything they do.
